Born in Ohio, Mr. Buccalo became acquainted with professional practices at an early age. His father, founder of Buccalo Catering Inc., taught him the many aspects of a professional service firm over an eleven year span. This initial knowledge allowed him to secure other chef positions at several restaurants during his years at The Ohio State University, where he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture and a minor in Art History. Mr. Buccalo also received his Master's degree in Architecture from Harvard University. During his years at Harvard, he lectured on architectural history, theory and drawing; he was also appointed history faculty research assistant, acted as proctor and has been invited as a guest critic at several universities including Columbia University, Tufts University, Massachusetts Bay Community College and Harvard University. After his architectural apprenticeship and licensing in 1988, he went to work for Studio Einauldi in Rome. There, he was project manager for the Shamasan Citadel restoration and renovation (Abha, Saudi Arabia). After this enriching experience Mr. Buccalo returned to the United States to work for John Burgee/Philip Johnson Architects in New York City.
Winner of the 1983 Washington Street competition at Harvard University and, finalist of the Hayworth Furniture 'Pantheon' competition and the Chicago Tribune Cabrini Green Housing competition, he has been successful on several other competitions. His work has been published in Columbus Citizen-Journal, Corporate Design, Architecture, Progressive Architecture, A+U Magazine, Harvard GSD News, Archaeology and, was featured on The McNeil-Leher Newshour. 1985-86 recipient of the Graham Foundation Fellowship, his thesis explored the fundamental principles of perception in what would become known as 'virtual reality'.
Since 1993, Mr. Buccalo has devoted full time as principal of The Drawing Studio and NJBArchitects. It is here that he hopes to fulfill a life long dream of providing beautiful humanistic renderings to architects and developers throughout the country and around the world. As a foundation to those goals, The Drawing Studio has completed illustrations for projects inBeijing, Manila; Kuala Lumpur; Singapore; Yokohama; Moscow; Prague; Italy; Saudia Arabia and Shanghai, as well as most of the states nationally. In 2002, he was elected President of the New York Society of Renderers, Inc.
